Mithra, a rehabilitation center, was founded in 1977 by Sr. Mary Theodore OAM, an Australian nun. She arrived in India in 1951. During her tenure in various institutions of her congregation, she was inspired by a divine calling to serve the most neglected segment of society: physically and mentally challenged, impoverished children. Responding to this call, she established Mithra.
She built the institution, overcoming significant challenges, and extended her services to all underprivileged individuals, regardless of caste, creed, religion, gender, or economic status. She was among the pioneers in Chennai to provide multidisciplinary care and rehabilitation for children with diverse disabilities. She served as the first area director for Special Olympics in India and the first president of the State Level Federation of Organizations for Persons with Disabilities. Her exemplary service was recognized with numerous awards, including the prestigious Mother Teresa Award 2007 from the Mother Teresa Charitable Trust.
